Dr. Angel Abbud-Madrid, a world-class expert that leads our local Colorado School of Mines program, delves into the deep space use of minerals that offer great potential for turning space into a treasure-trove of exploration and exploitation and perhaps great wealth for those that dare to sojourn beyond the Earth.

Angel Abbud-Madrid is the Director of the Center for Space Resources at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden where he leads a research program focused on the human and robotic exploration of space and the utilization of its resources. He is also the Director of the Space Resources Graduate Program, aimed at educating scientists, engineers, economists, entrepreneurs, and policymakers in the field of extraterrestrial resources. One of our previous Sky Watchers presenters, Anastasia Stepanova, is one of the PhD students in this program.

Space resources include water, oxygen, methane, precious metals, and other materials. These resources could be used for construction, life support, and propulsion. How real is space mining?  Our speaker will outline what’s coming and the issues ahead to cash in on the cosmos!  Here’s the link to the program – https://space.mines.edu

Here’s a link to his bio – https://mechanical.mines.edu/project/abbud-madrid-angel  (FYI – Angel’s name is Spanish and pronounced “AHNG-hehl”.)

During our meeting, local Sky Watcher Leonard David will also provide an update on international space missions and some of our members share their astrophotography.
